A Beginner's Guide to Men's Fragrances

The world of men’s fragrances is a nuanced one, so if you haven’t worn a cologne or aftershave in the past, you may not know where to start. Not to worry—Squire Fine Men’s Apparel is here to point you in the right direction.

Our sense of smell is closely tied to memory, nostalgia and desire. Wearing the right scent can increase your attractiveness in the eyes (or nostrils) of women, and also foster deeper emotional connections during social encounters. This could be a chance meeting with a stranger, or time spent with a close friend.

Alright, let’s get down to brass tacks. Ever wonder what differentiates aftershave, eau de toilette and cologne from one another? The difference between these three types of scents lies in the concentration of fragrance inside the bottle. Eau de toilette is the most powerful, typically containing about 4-8% of pure fragrance inside the bottle. Cologne contains about 2-5%, and aftershave contains only 1-3%.

If you’ve never worn a scent before, we recommend starting out with an aftershave or cologne. Consider asking a fragrance-savvy friend to sample a few of their favorite options. It’s always a good idea to try a few scents before choosing one you really like.

Once you’ve chosen your scent, we must urge you to remember one simple thing: less is more. While the fragrance that you’ve carefully curated undoubtedly smells quite good, just a few dabs are all you need. Fragrances today are designed to pack a big punch in just a few drops, and if you just apply to your neck’s pulse points or your chest area, your body will naturally spread the fragrance from your neck throughout the day.
