When a man receives an invitation, it may say formal wear, cocktail wear, black tie or black tie optional, but nowadays what do these mean? It seems that everyone has different definitions for these terms; it’s downright confusing to say the least. Getting dressed for formal events used to be easier, in the early days: the expected dress wear was either black tie for less formal ones and white tie for a more formal event. It was as simple as that.

Today, a tuxedo is the apex garment a man will wear, and most of the time they are rented. For black tie events, this is the appropriate attire. Black tie optional events call for either a tuxedo or dark suit and dark tie.

Wedding Clothing Tips

Recognize that this day is for the bride and groom and they should be the center of attention. Leave your flashy accessories, showy colored ties, and pin stripe suit at home. Try to adjust your outfit to look nice so you will not look completely out of place. For an informal wedding, skip the tie and wear a combination of lightly colored pants and a dark jacket. You want to blend it, but still look put together.

Remember these simple tips for cocktail parties and reception events. Leave the business grays and navy suits at home and add a little more color.
