This month, millions of people are tuning in to watch the world’s top athletes compete in the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. While most of these athletes will fade away, a few will go on to become global celebrities. In many cases, we look to these icons of human achievement for inspiration that goes beyond raw athleticism. Menswear brands know this, and in recent years they’ve leveraged this knowledge by teaming up with some of our favorite athletes to market their products.
Take this year’s Men’s Fashion Week in New York, for example. In addition to the many designers, models and other staples of the industry that frequent the event, you could also find the likes of David Beckham and Dwayne Wade making public appearances in some seriously high-end threads. Wade traded in his jersey and basketball shorts for pieces from Louis Vuitton, Givenchy, and Dior Homme. Meanwhile, over at Balmain, you could find LA Lakers shooting guard Nick Young.
Historically, we’ve tended to think of movie stars as the classic ambassadors of cutting-edge fashion. More recently, however, menswear brands have begun capitalizing on the universal appeal of athletes. Sports stars, perhaps more so than movie stars, embody an attainable ideal that more people can relate to. Of course, it doesn’t hurt that athletic frames are also excellent for showcasing the cut of fine clothing. You can find famous athletes collaborating with just about every major menswear brand in the world.
