Pocket Square Tips and IdeasAdding a pocket square to your ensemble not only adds a bit of style to your look but conveys your attention to detail as well.  It suggests that you make a little more effort toward caring for your appearance and is often just the right thing to make your outfit pop. It will get you noticed and draw admiration for you as a man in fashion with a polished guise.

Often, the staff at Squire Fine Men’s Apparel is asked about suggestions regarding the wearing of pocket squares, e.g. when to wear one, what colors and patterns are appropriate and what kind of fold should be used.  You should know that although there are common practices at play, there are no right and wrong ways to wear a pocket square. There are also several hundred different types of folds in use today.

The first rule is to use a pocket square made with quality workmanship and materials, typically silk, linen, wool or cotton.  This will affect both the crispness of straight folds and the flowing quality of bunched folds.

The second rule is to choose a pocket square with colors that compliment others somewhere else in your outfit, be it your tie, a pattern in your sport coat or shirt, or perhaps just your socks.  Colors don’t need to match exactly but should be similar enough to tie the look together.  As far as matching your tie, match the color tones, not the pattern.

The third rule is to pick an appropriate fold for your ensemble – a straight fold in white is dressier and most appropriate with a suit or tuxedo and white shirt, whereas a bunched fold in pattern is more casual and is commonly found with sport coats.  If you are unfamiliar with different fold types, simply bunch up your pocket square from the middle and stuff it into your breast pocket, either with or without the corners showing. Or, stop in to see your wardrobe consultants at Squire for a quick lesson.
