Tips for Cleaning Out a Cluttered Closet

Running out of room for clothes in your closet? Sooner or later, we all have to bite the bullet and clean out our closets to make room for new garments. Luckily, to help you out with this effort, Squire conferred with some of our best-dressed clients to learn how they pare down items in an overstuffed closet. So have no fear: here’s a quick list of tips to help you declutter, and decompress.

Reevaluate What Matters

Have you worn your “favorite” clothing item in the last 12 months? Do you still fit into those pants? Is that shirt finally ready to retire? These are a few questions to ask yourself before you embark on any closet clean-out. Take an inventory of what matters most to you and which items remain in solid condition, and then make it a point to rid yourself of items that are outdated or especially worn.

Invest In New Hangers

If you think of your closet as a temple, hangers should act as your shrine. They need to support and enhance the main attraction (e.g. dress suits) from the inside, without detracting from the overall cleanliness and order of the space. Slim velvet hangers can make a crucial difference here. Unlike a disorganized mix of plastic and flimsy wire hangers, velvet hangers can act as space-saving agents that make everything in your closet look uniform. Opt for the midnight black color — they’ll better showcase your clothing, while offsetting the blank white walls in most closets.

Go the Extra Step: Consider Garment Organizers

For some of our best-dressed clients, garment organizers are a given. You can label them according to categories that work best for you, and update them with new names relative to the seasons. Some insider examples: long sleeves, short sleeves, professional attire, dress suits.

Maximize Your Space

From drawer dividers to hanging or floor-mounted shoe racks, you can capitalize on your closet space in more ways than one. What’s most important here is to assess the aesthetic of everything—do you prefer your shoes to be resting on shelves, or hanging in tight pockets while suspended from the closet rod? Feel free to test drive some options first, then go with what works best in your eyes.
